Lindsay Czarniak anchors the 6 p.m. ET edition of SportsCenter Monday thru Friday. She has been with ESPN since August 2011 and had one of her most high-profile assignments to date in May as host of ABC’s coverage of the Indy 500. Prior to ESPN, Czarniak was a sports anchor at the NBC affiliate in Washington D.C., her hometown. She got her start as a news reporter at WAWS/WTEV-TV in Jacksonville, Fla.

How do you interact with viewers via Twitter?
I have found that the best way is to find interesting things to comment on that are either sports or non-sports related. For job purposes I’ll tweet photos or do some sort of behind the scenes look at what is going on. I found that’s what people who follow you tend to really enjoy — any kind of insight or background that you can give on our job on SportsCenter.

I will also share links that I’ve read that involve an interesting sports topic or some sort of musing that happens out of nowhere whether it’s pop culture or something like that. I also got into a Twitter war with one of my colleagues over how to describe [Washington Nationals outfielder] Bryce Harper’s brother’s mustache from the Home Run Derby. That was something that just randomly happened, but it was fun. You can also respond to viewers occasionally with your Twitter and that kind of helps the conversation.

Who are your favorite people to follow on Twitter?
Lena Dunham [actress, star of HBO’s Girls]. I love her, I think she’s hilarious. I pay attention to what she says; sometimes what she says makes no sense but it’s hilarious. I like the tweets that make me think or make me laugh.

For work, I follow [ESPN NFL Insider] Adam Schefter, people who I know may break news and all of my colleagues on SportsCenter. I also follow Miranda Lambert, who is my favorite country singer.

How do you use Twitter in your role as a journalist?
I pay attention to people that I admire. I’m following what other people are covering. I just think that reading articles that people share is great. I think it’s much more accessible if someone is tweeting. I also think it helps just by following people, the athletes that I cover and staying on top of what they’re saying.
