College coaches share their memories of “growing up” with ESPN

ESPN will celebrate its 35th anniversary this Sunday, less than a month after Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury reached his 35th birthday.

Kingsbury is one of three current Football Bowl Subdivision coaches who were born in ESPN’s first year on the air, in the 1979-80 cusp (Toledo’s Matt Campbell and Western Michigan’s P.J. Fleck are the others). Many current FBS coaches spent their formative years with ESPN on their television dials.

In the video above, Kingsbury, Oregon’s Mark Helfrich (born in 1973), USC’s Steve Sarkisian (1974) and Stanford’s David Shaw (1972) shared their memories of growing up with ESPN during their visits to the Bristol, Conn. campus this summer. Watch Sarkisian and Shaw square off tomorrow when No. 14 USC visits No. 13 Stanford (3:30 p.m., ABC) in a clash of Pac-12 powers.
