ESPN’s Chris Berman (L) with Pat Summerall during the 2009 Legends for Charity Dinner.

Legendary broadcaster Pat Summerall died on Tuesday at age 82. During Summerall’s four decades of broadcasting primarily with CBS and Fox, he delivered the details on 16 Super Bowls, the Masters and the U.S. Open tennis tournament among other events.

ESPN NFL Studio Host Chris Berman, pictured with Summerall in the photo above, said: “Pat Summerall had the unique ability to broadcast football to millions but let each of us individually feel like he was only talking to us. He was a welcome guest in all of our living rooms for many years. Pat’s mark on the NFL is indelible as a broadcaster where his style of less is more was so welcome. And, of course, he left his mark on the NFL as a player with one of the greatest kicks in the history of football for the Giants in the 50’s against the Browns in a snowstorm in a pivotal game. I will always be honored to have my name attached with his through the Pat Summerall Award. He was regarded so highly as a person and as a professional.”

ESPN Monday Night Football producer Jay Rothman worked with Pat Summerall in 2004 when the broadcasting legend handled play-by-play for four preseason games and four regular season games on ESPN’s Sunday Night Football. Rothman’s thoughts on Summerall: “Pat Summerall was such a good person and a great play-by-play man. He always found the perfect way to set up his analysts. What he said was short and sweet and always to the point. Everything we tend to make so complex he made look so easy. Though I only worked eight games with him, we remained friends. [ESPN’s MNF director] Chip Dean and I will always consider it a huge feather in our caps to say we worked with the great Pat Summerall during our careers.”
