Bob Ley recently traveled to Brazil, host country for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, as part of his reporting on this weekend’s special “Countdown to Brazil” edition of Outside The Lines (Sunday, May 27, at 9 a.m. ET).

Ley, who has been host of the acclaimed OTL series since its inception in 1990, explores the doubts and questions about the country’s preparations for this massive global sports event, tours the renovation of massive Maracana Stadium, observes the “pacification” of the city’s favelas, and interviews locals who discuss the culture of corruption and personal influence that the nation has vowed to change.

The Front & Center podcast above includes a conversation with Ley about the trip and this weekend’s special OTL. He also discusses his upcoming host role for ESPN’s coverage of the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, the growing popularity of world football in the U.S., and more.

The accompanying photo gallery also offers some stunning images that Ley and ESPN Brasil’s AnaPaula Julio took during his trip to the country.
