Postcards from Wimbledon, No. 3: Bunker Mentality

In real estate, the truism goes “the three most important things are: location, location, location.”

The same is true at Wimbledon. Centre Court, one of the cathedrals of sports, first opened its doors 90 years ago last week. Needless to say, the TV booth was not designed for TV.

What the courtside booth — affectionately referred to be the ESPN crew as “the bunker” — lacks in amenities and creature comforts, it more than makes up for in that most valuable commodity, location.

This is ESPN’s 10th Wimbledon, but the first year ESPN commentators have enjoyed the truly unique view, incomparable to the announce position in any arena for any sport anywhere.

In this video, Chris Fowler, Chris Evert and Mike Tirico talk about the privilege of calling matches from this historic spot. Also, Jamie Reynolds of production explains the challenges that come with that privilege.
