ESPN Deportes will air the Copa del Rey final between historic Clasico rivals Real Madrid and FC Barcelona today (3:15 p.m. ET) in Valencia, Spain. Coordinating producer Chuck Simmons spoke with Front Row about covering one of sports’ biggest rivalries.
How do you work with the on-air team to prepare them for the match?
Our on-air team understands the magnitude of this game and are extremely familiar with the teams, so the job of our production team is to make them comfortable and allow them to bring their expertise and enthusiasm to the game.
What’s the atmosphere like during a Real Madrid versus Barcelona match and how does it affect the coverage?
This Clasico takes place at a neutral stadium in Valencia, but it will be an electric atmosphere full of passionate supporters which will bring great energy to our broadcast.
How do you plan to capture the energy of the fans?
We will use our cameras to show what will be a relatively quiet city and stadium early in the day contrasted with a raucous atmosphere later that night.
