Temple University honors alumna ESPN’s Claire Smith

ESPN’s baseball news editor Claire Smith was honored Sept. 26 at The 14th Annual Lew Klein Alumni in the Media Awards ceremony, the flagship event of Temple University’s School of Media and Communication (SMC) in Philadelphia.

ESPN baseball news editor Claire Smith (below right) was among five Temple alumni to be recognized by the Lew Klein Alumni Awards, including Rock-and-Roll Hall-of-Famer John Oates of Hall & Oates, who was inducted into the SMC Hall of Fame. “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams (below left) received The Lew Klein Excellence in the Media Award, given annually to an outstanding media professional.

Smith, SMC ’79, was described as “a pioneer for women in sports journalism.”

Smith spent 32 years in the newspaper industry, working as a sportswriter and editor at The New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Bulletin and Hartford Courant before joining ESPN’s Remote News and Cross Platform departments in 2007.
