April Fools’: This is NOT SportsCenter, but fans’ DIY desks rule

Randy Scott, SC anchor: “The anchors-wearing-shorts idea is an urban legend of sorts, but like most urban legends, it’s based in a little truth. We’ve all done it, just not on SportsCenter. I did it at my first job in Lawton, Okla. So did my coworker at the time, [fellow SC anchor] Matt Barrie, who got in trouble because the director took a shot from behind the desk during one show and you could see his bare legs in the shot. No more shorts after that.”

To commemorate April Fools’ Day, Front Row has gathered a collection of DIY (Do-It-Yourself) SportsCenter desks, anchors and reporters we’ve noticed populating Twitter.

In high school and college gymnasiums and even in backyards, fans have constructed their re-creations of ESPN. The resulting photos are inventive, impressive and amusing. Front Row asked SportsCenter anchors Linda Cohn, Todd Grisham, Randy Scott and Dianna Russini and SC:AM contributor Sarina Morales to share their takes, which we’ve posted in the captions above the tweets.

Andy Hall and Sheldon Spencer contributed to this post.

Randy Scott, SC anchor: “This young man is going places; namely here. Look at the shirt-and-tie combo, look at the attention to detail on his traveling SC desk that he wore for Halloween. . . He’s dedicated, he’s talented, and he’ll be my boss one day.”

Todd Grisham, SC anchor:” I really appreciate the Irish look. Connor Mcgregor is the in thing right now. This kid is gold. Should his tie be hanging six inches below his belt? No, but that can be corrected.”

Linda Cohn, SC anchor: “Meet my newest SportsCenter co-anchor!”

Linda Cohn, SC anchor: “I could have sworn that was the first SportsCenter desk I sat behind when I did my first show back in July of 1992!”

Randy Scott, SC anchor: “Nyssa High School came to win with their SportsCenter desk. They are obvious fan favorites because they have the entire crowd on their side, plus, the suit-and-tie game is strong to quite strong. I need to know the story behind the facial hair, though. Feels like they’re working with a backstory there that they need to share with the world.”

Todd Grisham, SC anchor: “Despite the fact that this 6-year-old’s parents either A: Made the SportsCenter box for him OR B: Allowed a 6-year-old to play with scissors in order to make the box. . . I love this! My No. 1 choice.”

Sarina Morales, SC:AM contributor: “Literally TV to go. This kid is clearly thinking about the future of television.”

Dianna Russini, SC anchor: “I’m a firm believer in making your dreams happen. This is the definition of taking it into your own hands . . . [Senior Vice President, SportsCenter and News] Rob King embraces authenticity!”

Dianna Russini, SC anchor: “[ESPN hockey analyst] Barry Melrose finally has some competition at ESPN when it comes to facial hair. That’s an impressive ‘stache that demands credibility. Also, a reporter who proudly wears his press pass will give [SC correspondent] Pedro Gomez a scare when it comes to getting the big assignments.”

Sarina Morales, SC:AM contributor: “Haven’t seen a kid like this grow facial hair quite like he can.”
