ESPN dedicates sports court in Argentina

Community leaders, residents, government officials, special guests and ESPN employees gathered in La Cava, San Isidro, Argentina on Tuesday to participate in the opening of a new court space built for La Cava and its residents.

La Cava is one of the largest and most impoverished areas of greater Buenos Aires with a prevalence of crime, drugs, alcohol, violence and firearms use.

The global project, which in the span of one month has seen courts built in both La Cava and Rio de Janeiro, is led by ESPN and community organizations love.fútbol, A Ganar and UASI.

“ESPN is committed to providing resources to kids in La Cava to play sports,” Executive Vice President and Managing Director, ESPN International, Russell Wolff said. “We are pleased to collaborate with love.futbol, A Ganar and UASI to build this court in a community where there is a need as it can make a difference.”

Amidst dance, music and soccer matches, the event’s host, ESPN Latin America talent Leo Montero, joined ESPN senior leaders Wolff, John Kosner and Guillermo Tabanera, the Mayor of San Isidro, Gustavo Posse, as well as several Argentinian Olympic athletes from the national hockey, volleyball and rugby teams, to help dedicate the space.

“This is a clear example of ESPN’s commitment to our communities. We are convinced that sports are one of the best ways to positively build on youth’s values,” said Senior Vice President and General Manager, ESPN Latin America, Tabanera.

With Wolff and Executive Vice President, ESPN Digital & Print Media, Kosner, Tabanera assisted in the ribbon-cutting.

The court and surrounding area, which includes a new playground and a refurbished park area, were built and beautified with the help of community residents and ESPN employees. This completely new court space will be the home to ongoing programs for young people in the community where they will learn job skills and be empowered to fulfill their potential, all through the power of sports.
