#TBT: As ESPN+’s Exclusive Presentation Of The FA Cup Final Approaches, ESPNFC’s Analysts Share Memories From When They Vied For The Trophy

Craig Burley, Shaka Hislop and Steve Nicol starred in historic, controversial matches

ESPN+ will stream exclusively the FA Cup Final between Manchester City and Watford FC on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET, live from Wembley Stadium. The game marks the 138th Final for the oldest and longest-running domestic cup competition in global football.

In this week’s #TBT, ESPN FC’s Craig Burley, Shaka Hislop and Steve Nicol share memories from their experiences playing in FA Cup Final games.

In the video above, Burley remembers the anticipation and frenzy that built up to the Final in 1994 when he and his Chelsea teammates lost 0-4 to Manchester United. Hislop recalls the first-time strike – 35 yards from goal – by Liverpool’s Steven Gerard to tie the game in the 90th minute as Liverpool won in a shootout against Hislop’s West Ham United in 2006.

Nicol recalls how the 1989 Final, a 3-2 Liverpool extra time victory over Everton that was played barely a month after the Hillsborough tragedy, honored the memory of the victims and offered a momentary respite for the grieving Liverpool FC community.

Cahal Creamer and Shelby Lacy produced the video.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Host Dan Thomas, analysts Hislop and Nicol (in Bristol), with reporter Alexis Nunez and Craig Burley (from Wembley) will deliver a special ESPNFC FA Cup Final Preview Show, exclusively on ESPN+, Friday at 7 p.m.
