Former tennis star Chris Eubanks is stepping into a new role — bringing his insight, energy and passion to serve as a commentator for ESPN’s coverage of the Australian Open.
He’s newly retired from a pro career that featured several highlights: a Top 30 ranking, status as a four-time ATP Challenger champion and Team USA representative at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
“I grew up listening to great commentators — they fueled my love for the sport,” he said. “I just hope my voice helps others enjoy it too.”
Front Row asked the former tour favorite to explain how aggressive playing style and on-court perspective shape the way he breaks down matches for viewers.
What’s the most enjoyable part of being in Melbourne?
By far, it’s the hospitality. I’ve traveled all over the world, and I can confidently say Australia is home to some of the nicest people I’ve ever come across. Everyone here is always in a good mood, always willing to help — it really makes you feel at home.
What excites you most about swapping the racket for the microphone?
The biggest thing is the fact that I have an opportunity to continue to share my love and passion for tennis with the world. That’s something that not many players have the chance to do when they retire, so I’m thankful for that chance and am excited to find new ways to inform, educate and share my passion.
Do you see commentary as a way to extend your influence in tennis, perhaps even shaping how the next generation experiences the sport?
Yes … I can remember growing up watching Grand Slam matches with some of the commentators that I grew up with, and I know how important those voices were to my love of the sport. My goal isn’t to focus on extending my own influence, but rather to use my voice to share my love of tennis — and hopefully those watching enjoy.
