When Atlético de Madrid hosted FC Barcelona at the Metropolitano on Saturday, ESPN Social used creator-led coverage to bring fans closer to the action, anchored by Omar Raja’s social-first look at the buildup, atmosphere, and match day experience surrounding the marquee showdown.
By leveraging Raja – whose fan-first storytelling on social reaches more than 19 million followers – and his posts on the ESPN FC social handle, the coverage helped connect fans from afar to the immersive in-stadium experience. Raja’s content spanned exclusive access, player- and personality-driven interviews and in-the-moment content designed to extend the event beyond the live match and give audiences a better sense of the magnitude of the game.
Leading up to the match, ESPN FC published original content by Raja from Madrid including a collaboration with Atlético star Julián Álvarez, and match day posts that added color to the story on and off the pitch.
These elements helped turn a top-tier soccer event into a social-first experience for fans.
The standout moment was ESPN FC’s international launch of Raja’s “Golden Ticket” – the fan-first activation which takes two unsuspecting fans from their nosebleed seating to pre-game field-pass access and VIP seats during the game.
That milestone gave the activation a clear fan-focused centerpiece and underscored how ESPN Social can pair access with storytelling to create connection around global soccer events.
Note: Atlético de Madrid fans – Nick Douglas, and his dad, Alex – from Glasgow, Scotland, were beneficiaries of the inaugural international #ESPNSocial “Golden Ticket” activation.
Barcelona’s 2-1 victory over Atlético added even more weight to the weekend.
The larger takeaway was ESPN’s ability to translate the action and atmosphere inside the Metropolitano into content that touched fans across ESPN FC platforms providing a unique, immersive way to experience one of LALIGA’s biggest matches of the season.
On Sunday, May 10, ESPN Social will return to Spain for social-first coverage of the 264th FC Barcelona-Real Madrid ElClásico at Camp Nou in Barcelona (3 p.m. ET | ESPN, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN+)
