Throughout May, SportsCenter has marked Mental Health Awareness Month with a first-of-its-kind editorial initiative across ESPN platforms — sharing personal stories, thoughtful conversations and messages centered around mental health, vulnerability and support.

The initiative featured a series of vignettes and segments woven throughout SportsCenter programming during the month, with anchors, commentators and ESPN employees discussing their experiences while encouraging ongoing conversations around mental wellness.

Johann Castillo (VP of Production, SportsCenter) said: “Working on SportsCenter’s Mental Health Awareness initiative filled me with tremendous pride, as we came together across so many teams for an unprecedented, month-long commitment to elevate such an important topic.

“This was a true collective effort — T.R.U.S.T., Human Resources, the Features Unit, Creative Services, Talent Office, and our production teams all working side by side with dedicated leadership. Through powerful storytelling, passionate athletes and guest advocates, and the vulnerability of our anchor testimonials — brought to life by the vision of Producer Marco Alfandary, Editor Eduard Mostert, and the exceptional camerawork of [Senior Studio Operator] Josh Therriault — we built something far greater together, creating space for truth, empathy and connection around an issue that extends far beyond sports and is all around us, especially impacting our youth.”

The effort was led collaboratively across SportsCenter, ESPN Production, ESPN Communications and various business resource group [BERGS] including T.R.U.S.T., which is focused on mental health and well-being. This effort reflects a company-wide commitment to creating space for honest dialogue and support.

“The ESPN T.R.U.S.T. team was honored to support the trailblazing storytellers on SportsCenter,” said Jonothon Halley McLeod, an ESPN Communications multimedia producer and a member of T.R.U.S.T. “They remain committed to conveying authentic, insightful mental health stories to our fans. This month’s content was monumental and we look forward to carrying that momentum into the rest of the year.”

Castillo considers this “the most important project I have ever worked on in my 23 years here. If we helped even a handful of people, then we did the right thing — and my hope is that it doesn’t stop here; that it serves as a constant reminder to reach out, show compassion and ensure that no one has to face these challenges alone.”
