MNF Preview: Chargers-Jags

In the video above, our experts Mike Tirico, Ron Jaworski and Jon Gruden analyze the MNF matchup between the San Diego Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars who square off tonight (8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) at Everbank Field.

Both teams have faced hardships this season.

The Chargers, who were projected by many to win the AFC West this season, are in third place in the division looking up at the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders. San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers leads the NFL in interceptions. At 4-7, the Chargers’ playoff chances are bleak.

The Jaguars are 3-8 and fired their head coach Jack Del Rio last week.

Maurice Jones-Drew is a cog in the offense and continues to produce (1,040 rushing yards through 11 games) but the overall offensive woes and the progression of rookie QB Blaine Gabbert have left the Jags looking for answers.

In other Monday Night Football items of interest, Kelefa Sanneh of The New Yorker has a profile on Jon Gruden this week entitled Monday Night Lights: How Jon Gruden became America’s football coach.

And speaking of Gruden, Sports Illustrated conducted a poll of 282 NFL players, asking who their favorite NFL commentator is.

Gruden led all broadcasters with 21 percent of the vote followed by Fox’s Troy Aikman (9%), retired John Madden (9%), NFL Network’s Deion Sanders (8%) and longtime ESPN Sunday NFL Countdown host Chris Berman (6%). Results are posted in this week’s issue.
