Storied rivalry

The 2015 Jimmy V Women’s Classic marks Notre Dame’s second straight time participating, while UConn will be playing for the fifth straight year and eighth time overall. This heated rivalry dates back to 1995-96 when the two teams were part of the former BIG EAST, with UConn leading the all-time series 33-11, including a 63-53 victory in the 2015 national title game.

Inspiration. Motivational leader. Joy he coached with.

Those are the words that women’s basketball coaches UConn’s Geno Auriemma and Notre Dame’s Muffet McGraw used to describe legendary NC State coach Jim Valvano. ESPN is in the midst of the ninth annual Jimmy V Week for Cancer Research across all domestic networks and platforms. The top-ranked Huskies and No. 3 Fighting Irish meet for the second straight year in the Jimmy V Women’s Classic presented by Corona (Saturday, 5:15 p.m. ET, ESPN) from Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn.

While the game is important to the teams’ NCAA portfolios come March, the coaches know that the Jimmy V Week cause is greater, as they explain in the video below.
