#EURO2020 Postcard: ESPN’s Sam Borden Sends Greetings From Rome

ESPN reporters and producers covering the EUROS file postcards taking fans behind the scenes of the UEFA European Football Championship 2020

Beginning with today’s opening match of UEFA European Football Championship 2020 (Italy vs. Turkey, 2:30 p.m. ET, ESPN), Global Correspondent and Senior Writer Sam Borden will continue ESPN’s tradition of award-winning journalists covering major global soccer tournaments.

Following the likes of Jeremy Schaap (at the FIFA World Cup in 1998, 2010, and 2014, and UEFA EURO 2016 in France) and Lisa Salters (World Cup 2002 in Korea-Japan), among others, Borden will serve as ESPN’s lead television reporter covering matches and top stories for multiple platforms throughout the month-long tournament across 11 countries in Europe.

Borden, who is working with veteran ESPN producer Jim Witalka, begins his journey in Rome and will crisscross the continent to capture the best sense-of-place stories. Three additional reporters – Martin Ainstein (Spain), Alexis Nunes (UK), and Archie Rhind-Tutt (Germany) – will provide additional coverage based in their home countries.

In the first of Front Row’s #EURO2020 postcard series, Borden discusses his role and his upcoming travels.

Editor’s Note: Earlier this week, Borden earned a Sports Emmy Award in the Short Feature category for his “Big Mo Show” with producer Harry Hawkings for Sunday NFL Countdown about young Baltimore sports fan Mo Gaba, whose resilience and positive attitude in the face of terminal cancer inspired the city’s sports teams and fans.

On his UEFA EURO 2020 itinerary …
We’re in Rome for this week ahead of the tournament’s opening match on Friday night, then headed to Skopje on Saturday so we can capture the emotion of Macedonia’s fans as they watch their beloved team play its first match in the first-ever major tournament it has qualified for. That piece, in particular, is one I’m really excited to do – just getting the chance to see how Macedonians experience hearing their national anthem for the first time on one of soccer’s biggest stages is something I’m guessing is going to be pretty fantastic.
