Inside ESPN’s new ‘Monday Night Football’ mobile production unit

ESPN’s newest three-unit fleet of production trucks will make their highly-anticipated Monday Night Football debut for ESPN’s kickoff matchup on Sept. 8, showcasing the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears (8:15 p.m. ET | ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Deportes).

These cutting-edge units, which will also play a key role in ESPN’s first-ever Super Bowl in 2027, mark a new industry standard with unmatched technology integrated throughout, allowing us to further set new trends and best serve fans well into the future.

Let’s dive into what these behind-the-scenes advancements mean for fans, with Eddie Okuno (Director, Specialist Operations).

Top 3 things for fans…

  1. Unmatched picture and audio: Crisp, rich and detailed. Simply, the best available.
  2. More cameras = Enhanced action, replays and more.
  3. Ability to create more alternate viewing experiences and offer enhanced customizability.

Copper cables to Fiberoptics

“The unit is a dream come true and the tech is truly groundbreaking. It’s all connected via fiberoptics, meaning everything is lighter, more dense and can travel more signals over a piece of fiber than the copper cables that legacy equipment required.

Copper cable was heavy and carried one signal per cable. Flagship can travel thousands of signals over just one strand of fiber.” – Eddie on the cable evolution

The yellow fiberoptic cable on the left can carry thousands of signals. The 3 copper cables to the right of the yellow fiber can only carry 36 signals.
