As ESPN prepares to begin its new MLB package, Ashley O’Connor, Vice President of Programming & Acquisitions, discusses the strategy behind the updated schedule, the significance of its tentpole events and what fans can expect from the integration of MLB.TV into the ESPN App.
What went into selecting the tentpole events for the new package and how did you factor in their significance for fans?
We went into it with careful consideration, aiming to identify significant MLB summer holidays, which led us to highlight Memorial Day and the Second Half Opener. Additionally, ESPN carried the launch of the Little League Classic in 2017 and it quickly became beloved by fans. We worked to make it a staple of our comprehensive Little League coverage over the years, and we wanted to ensure we could keep it on ESPN.
What was the strategic thinking behind the structure of the new linear MLB package?
We are thrilled about the latest iteration of our MLB schedule because it allows us to maximize broadcasting windows across our networks, giving fans more opportunities to engage with America’s pastime. And our package gives us added flexibility to capture key storylines throughout the season, rather than being tied to a specific window each week.
From a programming perspective, what makes baseball a strong fit for ESPN’s portfolio?
MLB holds a special place at ESPN and has been an integral part of our coverage since 1990. With our comprehensive coverage of Little League, college and pro baseball, we’re in a unique position to highlight athletes across all levels of the sport.
What excites you most about ESPN becoming the exclusive rights holder of MLB.TV and being available on the ESPN App?
MLB.TV has been around for 23 years and has become essential for MLB fans, particularly those who love teams in different markets. Bringing the out-of-market games package to the ESPN App epitomizes our commitment to “All of ESPN, All in One Place” — we’re making games more accessible to fans everywhere. As a baseball fan, I’m personally excited about the opportunity to watch thousands of games within the ESPN App with the enhanced features & functionality that are uniquely ESPN.
