Alex Ovechkin’s historic career needs little introduction, but 8 Forever, an ESPN-produced feature, looks beyond the milestones to explore the lasting impact he’s made through the people he’s connected with along the way. ESPN Producer Alexandra Nolen gave us a look at how the feature came together.

A regular goal of ESPN’s Internal Productions department is to help professional athletes or coaches tell their legacy. When the NHL storytelling group approached Production about honoring the Washington Capitals legend, the question wasn’t how to recount what fans already know, but how to reveal something deeper.
“Everyone who follows the NHL or a general sports fan already knows that Alex Ovechkin, ‘the Great 8’, is the greatest goal scorer in the NHL,” said Nolen. “His career will be remembered in the history books forever. But what is his legacy and impact off the ice?”
That question became the driving force behind 8 Forever.
Working closely with the Washington Capitals and conducting their own research, the ESPN team identified eight individuals whose lives Ovechkin had personally impacted — a nod to his iconic nickname. “We wanted to tell the story of how their bond with Alex will last forever,” said Nolen.

Nolen and the team knew that fully representing Alex’s off-ice commitment to the community needed to include his work helping kids with cancer. His efforts have raised over a quarter of a million dollars for pediatric cancer research with the V Foundation. Dr. Duane Mitchell, who presented Alex with a signed stick, is a physician scientist that leads a team at the University of Florida focused on pediatric cancer research. “It was extremely powerful to have Dr. Mitchell say, ‘thank you,’” Nolen noted.

“At ESPN we believe the power of sport extends far beyond the game, especially in the fight against cancer,” said Kevin Martinez, VP, ESPN Corporate Citizenship. “Alex Ovechkin’s legacy is not only defined by his achievement on the ice, but the impact he’s making off of it — turning every goal into impact by raising critical funds for cancer research through THE GR8 CHASE for Victory Over Cancer Campaign at the V Foundation.”
Producing a feature of this scale on a tight timeline came with challenges. “Within two weeks, we made calls to multiple people, tracked down eight individuals across the U.S. and Canada, asked what Ovi means to them, and coordinated flights and hotels for their filming weekend in March,” said Nolen. At the same time, the team worked with a designer on custom hockey sticks with personalized logos for the participants, arranged arena logistics and managed complex production planning. “A project like this with a tight deadline truly doesn’t happen without a group of talented people working together,” she added.

“Alexandra is a talented producer with experience on large-scale projects like this one,” said ESPN Senior Managing Producer Denny Wolfe. “Along with a great visual sense, we knew that she would have ideas on how to articulate Alex Ovechkin’s legacy beyond the ice.”
“Our entire team is grateful for the effort and support from the Washington Capitals, especially Sergey Kocharov (Senior Vice President & Chief Communications Officer), Megan Eichenberg (Vice President of Corporate Communications) and Aimée Brillhart (Vice President, Productions),” said Kevin Davies, ESPN Managing Producer. “They’ve been outstanding partners all year on this project, and we couldn’t have done it without them.”

Ultimately, Nolen hopes audiences come away with a broader understanding of Ovechkin’s impact. “When fans watch 8 Forever, we hope it will be a reminder that away from the spotlight and the ice, Alex Ovechkin has impacted and changed so many lives.
“Behind the milestones and records, he’s not just a hockey player — he’s a friend to many, who always went out of his way to give back and care for others.”
The 8 Forever feature will be live during ABC Hockey Saturday on April 11.
