Rich Eisen returns to Bristol: Inside his ‘SportsCenter’ homecoming, 23 years later
The host of The Rich Eisen Show on Disney+ and ESPN Radio recently returned to the show he anchored from 1996-2003. Here's a behind-the-scenes look.

For the first time in more than two decades, Rich Eisen walked back into ESPN’s Bristol, Conn. campus — a place that helped define both his career and the DNA of SportsCenter.
It had been since 2003. A lot had changed.
These days, Eisen calls Los Angeles home, hosting The Rich Eisen Show and serving as a prominent voice across NFL Network coverage — far from the Bristol campus where it all began. From 1996–2003, he helped define a generation of SportsCenter before becoming one of the original faces of NFL Network — now part of the ESPN family.
After getting his bearings, Eisen made his way through Bristol’s halls, eventually landing where it all once centered — his old desk. What followed was less a walkthrough and more a time capsule.

After the initial walk down memory lane, it was right to work.
In less than 24 hours, ESPN’s SportsCenter Universe team ideated, shot and turned around a fully produced “This is SportsCenter” commercial — blending Eisen’s return with the kind of humor and nostalgia that defined an era.
The concept: Eisen returns to Bristol, only to find… nothing quite works like it used to. His ID won’t scan. His mailbox is overflowing. His desk is covered in cobwebs. And somewhere in the chaos — “Wait… is that my tie?”
The spot was the result of weeks of planning, scripting and collaboration — with Eisen involved from the very beginning.
“The idea came up in the first production meeting for Rich Eisen’s return to Bristol. Rich was fully invested from the beginning and excited to recreate a ‘This Is SportsCenter commercial’,” said Coordinating Producer John Summa.
“The SportsCenter Universe Team specializes in talent-focused content and immediately scripted scenes to present to Rich. Throughout the shoot Rich tossed out more ideas with producers Blake Grudzien, Ky Smith and Andrew Helfman, which Rich related to the way it was done for original TISC commercials.”

RECREATING 2000: STUDIO X GOES BACK IN TIME
The nostalgia didn’t stop at the commercial.
Inside Studio X, ESPN’s production and creative teams meticulously recreated the look and feel of early-2000s SportsCenter – from lighting to graphics to the reappearance of the iconic anchor desk.
ESPN Creative Services even brought back original 1996-era studio graphics, bridging generations of the show in a single broadcast.

BACK IN THE CHAIR – AND FULLY INVOLVED

Eisen didn’t just show up to host — he dove in.
From screening room prep to script adjustments and video edits, he was hands-on throughout the day, working closely with producers and reviewing elements of the show in real time.
“I’m proud of the content our team created to celebrate Rich’s return to Bristol and telling the stories of a great day of sports in an entertaining and memorable way,” said Tom DeCorte, Coordinating Producer.

SHOWTIME: A NIGHT THAT BRIDGED ERAS
Eisen’s return brought together voices from across the sports world and across ESPN’s timeline.

-
- Among the highlights:
-
- SportsCenter anchor, Monday Night Countdown and golf host Scott Van Pelt reported live from Augusta National following Rory McIlroy’s second Masters victory
- NHL superstar Alex Ovechkin participated in a candid interview — with Eisen pushing (unsuccessfully) for post-career news – and Ovechkin promising to return when the time comes
- ESPN analysts Tim Legler and Daniel Jeremiah, added insights from the NBA and NFL, respectively
-
It felt both current and familiar — a reminder of how SportsCenter continues to evolve while staying rooted in its history.

THE NEXT MORNING: REFLECTING ON THE RETURN
Back on his own platform, Eisen reflected on the experience — revisiting what it meant to return to Bristol and sit in the chair again for the first time in 20-plus years.
