The kick is up and it’s . . . ESPN.com NFL blogger practices FGs with Jaguars specialist Josh Scobee

ESPN.com’s AFC South blogger Paul Kuharsky (@espn_afcsouth) knows the value of walking in someone else’s shoes.

A reporter by trade, Kuharsky has made it a point during his career to do more than just observe the athletes on the field. He’s worked out with NFL prospects, “raced” some of the fastest players in the AFC South and tried to catch punts from the Tennessee Titans’ Brett Kern. In his latest challenge, Kuharsky attempts to master the art of kicking field goals with Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee as his guide.

“I’ve always respected that it’s incredibly difficult to do consistently well,” said Kuharsky, of placekicking. “If you have a big leg and can hit some alone on a practice field, it doesn’t translate at all to the idea of doing it in pads and a helmet and timing it up with a snap and a hold against angry rushers in pursuit.”

Reflecting honestly on his recent challenge, Kuharsky’s respect is sincere.

“Field goals are more up my alley,” he said. “Though when you see what happens to my soccer cleats in this piece, I certainly can’t say I didn’t play the part of a clown.”
