Chris Fowler, ESPN’s versatile play caller and host across a variety of sports and events, will return to the college football game booth this fall when he joins longtime colleague Kirk Herbstreit for ABC Saturday Night Football. The two will be on site with College GameDay Built by The Home Depot each Saturday morning before turning their sights to that week’s primetime contest. They shared their thoughts on the news and what’s ahead, with Front Row:

Chris, you’re well-known for your detailed preparation for GameDay, often working late into the night and early morning on your notes. How will you balance both GameDay and Saturday night duties?
Fowler: It’s a very natural fit. The two dovetail because so much of GameDay covers the big ABC game later that night. Yes, it’s a full platter for me, but that’s good. Over the years, I’ve become better at time management, prioritizing and being efficient, plus I have a good support group to help me prep.

How do you feel about the extra time you’ll be spending with Kirk on your weekends?
Fowler: Kirk’s at the top of his profession and he’s been a close friend for almost two decades; he’s not just a colleague. We have a really natural chemistry that goes back to Kirk’s first audition for GameDay. But that friendship doesn’t get in the way of us challenging each other and pushing each other to be at our best. He is as dedicated, informed and spot-on as any analyst in any sport. I am looking forward to it.

Kirk, what is your reaction to working with a new partner for the first time since 2006?
Herbstreit: First of all, it has been an honor and privilege to work with Brent Musburger over the last eight years. I’ve been a fan of his since I was young and I will always be a Brent fan. I look forward to hearing “You’re looking live. . .” next season as Brent’s voice carries over to the SEC Network.

I have the highest respect for Chris and his work on all of his numerous assignments including college football. . . I look forward to teaming up with Chris – in the booth and on GameDay – and continuing to do great work together. Kirk Herbstreit
