ESPN Brazil brings sports facility to underserved Rio community

In a year when the world’s eyes are on Rio De Janeiro and the role sports will play in addressing the city’s current challenges, ESPN has built a new multifunctional sports court in the community of Morro dos Macacos in Rio. It was unveiled at a ceremony on Saturday.

ESPN Brazil talent Juliana Veiga and Gustavo Hofman joined nearly 400 members of the Morro Dos Macacos community at the official opening, which included local music, food and dance. ESPN teamed up with community organizations love.futbol, A Ganar and INATOS in an effort to create a place that is more than just a sports facility.

Following the opening, the sports court will be the home to ongoing programs for young people in the community where they will learn job skills and be empowered to fulfill their potential, all through the power of sports. By mobilizing the community and ensuring quality sports programming, this space will serve as a hub for local activity and provide a safe place for young people.
