This weekend brings the “Subway Series” – the nickname for the clash between the Mets and the Yankees – to ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball (8 p.m. ET). Both teams are fighting to cement their spots in the playoffs as October approaches.

One season after the debut of interleague play in Major League Baseball, ESPN’s first telecast of a regular-season matchup between the Mets and Yankees took place June 28, 1998 at Shea Stadium. The Mets beat the Yankees, 2-1.

This week’s #TBT features ESPN analyst Jessica Mendoza’s take on what this series means to both teams this time around.

“It has been 15 years since these two teams have met in the postseason [the 2000 World Series] and this feels like an October matchup, with the emotion of this rivalry and how likely it is that both of these teams will be playing in October,” said Mendoza.

“It’s a great test to foreshadow the very near future for New York and their two teams.”
