Behind The Scenes

‘Back to School’ for four coaches

With roots that run deep and memories that never fade, four of ESPN’s most recognizable football faces returned to their respective hometowns this summer.

The visits were recorded for a series of features that kick off this Sunday, Aug. 28, on the 10 a.m. SportsCenter.

“SportsCenter: Back to School” runs Sunday through Wednesday.

It’s the result of cameras following former head coaches and ESPN NFL analysts Mike Ditka (Aliquippa, Pa.) and Herm Edwards (Monterey, Calif.), and ESPN college football analysts Lou Holtz (East Liverpool, Ohio) and Lee Corso (Miami, Fla.).

Each made a surprise return to spend time with the current football team at his former high school.

While the homecomings were focused on the football field, each of the coaches also made stops at some of their favorite hometown haunts, including a visit to Ditka’s boyhood home where his mother still lives.

But the overall message each of the coaches delivered — in words and actions — is that no one should ever forget where he or she came from.

“For me, the circle is complete now,” Edwards said.

“The first time I played organized tackle football was (in Monterey). That was a long time ago.

“I come back now and I get to coach the team at a school that I played for. For me it was special because I completed the circle.”

The Holtz feature starts the series on Sunday, followed by 9 a.m. SportsCenter debuts of Corso on Monday; Edwards on Tuesday; and Ditka on Wednesday.

Above, you can enjoy a glimpse at Holtz back on the field showing the fire and passion that made him one of football’s most respected coaches.

Coming Monday on Front Row, we will have more behind-the-scenes video as well as two photo galleriesfrom the Ditka and Edwards’ visits that you won’t find anywhere else.
