MNF Open: Montana to help promote Steelers-49ers ‘Super’ showdown

Football legend and ex-49ers quarterback Joe Montana will be featured in the MNF Open

Tonight’s Monday Night Football matchup is arguably ESPN’s best of the season: the Pittsburgh Steelers visit the San Francisco 49ers at legendary Candlestick Park.

Both playoff-bound teams have 10-3 records and are among the elite in their respective conferences. They have a history of greatness, too.

Of the 45 Super Bowl titles all-time, these two franchises boast a combined 11 Lombardi Trophies (Steelers: six; 49ers: five).

MNF’s Jon Gruden, who started his NFL career in 1990 as an assistant with the 49ers, is particularly excited about tonight’s game: “These are two global franchises, and both of these teams should be playing this time of year in a big game. It’s going to be great.”

Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana (pictured above) led the 49ers to four Super Bowl championships, and he will star in the MNF opening video tonight.

The Western Pennsylvania native will talk about this marquee prime time matchup and how players love to play games like this on the NFL’s biggest stage.

Finally, one great stat about this game courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau: Tonight is just the fourth game in MNF history featuring two teams with at least 10 wins and a winning percentage of .750 or better.

The 49ers played in – and won – all three previous occurrences:
