SEC commissioner Mike Slive will retire next July after 13 years as head of the conference. He plans to begin treatment for a recurrence of prostate cancer.

ESPN issued the following statements regarding Slive.

ESPN President John Skipper:
Commissioner Slive will leave an indelible imprint on the collegiate landscape. He has positively transformed the Southeastern Conference during his 13-year tenure as Commissioner, but his leadership in advancing all of intercollegiate athletics throughout his career is equally impressive. The sports community will benefit from his contributions for years to come.

Senior Vice President of College Networks Justin Connolly:
One of the many rewarding experiences I’ve had in this role is being able to call Commissioner Slive not just a professional colleague, but also a friend. As a principal architect in the formation of the SEC Network, he has been intimately involved in all aspects of one of the most successful network launches in cable television history. And the amazing thing is, the SEC Network is just one of his many distinguished career highlights.
