Lil Wayne shout-out thrills Britt McHenry

In the midst of covering the Atlanta Falcons’ Monday firing of head coach Mike Smith, ESPN reporter Britt McHenry had a moment few will ever be able to lay claim to: a shoutout from a celebrity with over 20 million Twitter followers.

“I was in the middle of NFL coverage when a viewer notified me of Lil Wayne’s (@LilTunechi) tweet,” McHenry told Front Row. “He’s a well-known fan of SportsCenter, and I’m told he is also a big fan of my colleague, Sara Walsh.”

Lil Wayne (a past guest on SportsCenter and ESPN2’s First Take) tweeted the above message, “McHenry is just Awesome!”

While some on Twitter joked it must have been a shoutout to McHenry, Ill., it’s a good bet the multi-Grammy winning, multi-platinum-selling performer was giving props to McHenry.

“It may come as a surprise to some, but I’m a huge rap fan and used to blast Lil Wayne in an old beat up Ford Focus as I was starting out in this business (quite a mental image, I know),” McHenry said. “Needless to say, some things come full circle. The best part was explaining to my parents who Lil Wayne is; I think it gives Mama McHenry some street cred in their Florida neighborhood.”
