The General’s Last Ride: Bob Ley Retires From ESPN

EDITOR’S NOTE: ESPN Communications photographer Rich Arden shares a handful of his favorite candid photos from before and after Wednesday’s Outside the Lines show, which centered on Bob “The General” Ley and his recently announced retirement.

Colleagues and compadres, Bob Ley and Jeremy Schaap, greet one another prior to going on set for the final time in Ley’s distinguished 40-year ESPN career.

Before sitting at the OTL table for the final time, Ley and colleagues Rayna Banks (middle) and Carolyn Hong (right) discuss some of his post-retirement plans.

Throughout the afternoon, Ley frequently reached for his phone to gush about his photogenic grandchildren. Here, Senior Vice President, Original Content Rob King enjoys the manual slideshow.

After an on-air toast – of Stags’ Leap Winery’s Cabernet Sauvignon – Ley and Schaap shake hands to culminate a memorable 30 minutes of TV.

(L-R) Ley, Executive Producer Andy Tennant and Schaap have worked together for more than two decades, creating some of ESPN’s most memorable and impactful storytelling.

After walking out of Studio Z – known as “the studio Bob built” – for the final time, Ley is saluted by OTL staff and friends.
