This weekend, the FIA Formula One World Championship returns to its original television home in the United States when the Rolex Australian Grand Prix airs on ESPN2 on Sunday at 1 a.m. ET. All 21 races in the championship will be televised on ESPN and ABC along with practice and qualifying sessions.
Formula 1 first appeared on American television in 1962 on ABC’s Wide World of Sports. In 1969, the program aired highlights from the Canadian Grand Prix, which was run at Mosport Park near Toronto and won by Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. Races appeared on ABC through 1988 and on ESPN through 1997.
