Detroit’s Mumford High Hails The Undefeated’s Jemele Hill
School dedicates auditorium in the name of ESPN journalist, Class of '93 alumna and longtime supporter
DETROIT – The past two days in her hometown have provided a happy walk down memory lane for ESPN’s Jemele Hill.
On Monday night, the chief correspondent and senior columnist for The Undefeated gave the commencement address at her alma mater, Detroit’s Samuel C. Mumford High School. While addressing the 2018 graduates, Hill recalled her time at the school and encouraged students to be hardworking and committed to their vision for the future.
On Tuesday morning, Mumford renamed its auditorium the Jemele J. Hill Auditorium in her honor.

Principal Angela Prince lauded Hill, a 1993 graduate, for her career achievements and commitment to giving back to the school and her hometown.
In February, Hill launched a campaign via Twitter that ensured 900 inner city students in Detroit, including those from Mumford, would have the opportunity to see Marvel Entertainment’s Black Panther. Hill also sponsored Mumford’s wrestling program, the only wrestling team in the Detroit public school system.

Of course, there’s even more for Hill to look forward to. She will return to Detroit in August as the co-chair for the National Association of Black Journalists’ annual convention, where she will be honored as the NABJ Journalist of the Year.
