#TBT: “Move Over, Bud!” Enjoy Steve Levy’s 1994 ESPN NHL PxP Commentating Debut

Saturday and Monday in Seattle, MNF voice Levy performs a unique NHL-NFL double-dip starting with calling the Kraken's home ice opener on ESPN+ and Hulu; flash back to this vintage ice call - with an assist from Bill Clement - of a Flames-Rangers game

Saturday night in Seattle, Steve Levy turns Marty McFly.

Levy, who joined ESPN in August 1993, goes back to the future with a return to NHL play-by-play duties.

Levy will call the expansion Seattle Kraken’s Climate Pledge Arena home ice debut against the Vancouver Canucks on ESPN+ and Hulu (10 p.m. ET).

It’s the first half of a unique Seattle doubleheader for Levy, who called NHL games for ESPN from 1994-2004. Less than 48 hours later – and a few miles down the road from his hockey return – Levy will be back at his “day job” as the voice of ESPN’s Monday Night Football as the host Seahawks welcome the New Orleans Saints at Lumen Field.

The historic Kraken call will be his first ESPN NHL play-by-play assignment in 17 years, when he voiced the host Calgary Flames’ Game 6 victory over the San Jose Sharks in the 2004 Western Conference Finals.

But where and when did Levy, who has a history of legendary NHL calls for ESPN, officially break the ice?

Front Row unearthed his first assignment, Jan. 5, 1994, in Madison Square Garden alongside hockey legend Bill Clement. In the video above, enjoy Levy’s entrance into the “two-shot” and his first goal call in the Flames-New York Rangers’ clash.
