The Conrad Mainwaring Tip That Led to 13 Months of Investigative Reporting And One Gut-Wrenching Story Of Alleged Sexual Abuse

ESPN Investigative reporter Mark Fainaru-Wada and investigative journalist Mike Kessler collaborated for an Outside the Lines investigation that revealed 41 allegations of sexual abuse against track coach Conrad Mainwaring.

This Sunday on E:60 (9 a.m. ET, ESPN), producer Greg Amante helps bring the investigation to life with a riveting companion video piece.

In this video for Showcase, Fainaru-Wada and Kessler give some backstory on how the 13 months of reporting unfolded, including what led to KPCC’s Kessler collaborating with OTL.

Robbin Dunn, Jon McLeod and Molly Mita produced the video above.

SC Featured: Former Hoops Star Turned Cloistered Nun Shelly Pennefather’s Remarkable Journey

On Saturday, Aug. 3 SC Featured tells the story of Shelly Pennefather, a star forward for the Villanova women’s basketball team (1983-87) and a first-team All-American, Wade Trophy winner, three-time Big East player of the year and the school’s all-time leading scorer for men and women at the time. She went on to play professionally for three years in Japan. Then she gave it all up, choosing her faith, to become Sister Rose Marie, a cloistered nun.

This past June, during a jubilee celebration she was able to hug her aging mother for the first time in years – and likely for the last time. ESPN was there for that hug and many other hugs with her family, former teammates and friends. Elizabeth Merrill writes the espnW story available Saturday, Aug. 3 on espnW and ESPN.com
